Why I Volunteer

I first learned about Stone Soup PDX through the Montavilla News, an online neighborhood newsletter (montavilla.net). I’ve lived in the Mt. Tabor neighborhood for 33 years, and I truly love this community. I want to be part of making it even better.

Last year, I noticed Stone Soup’s sign at their storefront on Glisan Landing (NE Glisan and 74th) and was immediately curious. I’ve always loved the fable of Stone Soup—how something wonderful can grow from one simple idea, with many people adding what they can. It’s a beautiful metaphor for community building.

Stone Soup PDX lives up to its name. Their slogan, “Everyone deserves a seat at the table,” deeply resonates with me.

As a mother and grandmother, I know how food expresses care, comfort, nourishment, and love. And as a mental health therapist for 35 years, I’ve seen firsthand how vital it is for people to gain skills, confidence, and opportunity—with the right support along the way.

For years, I’ve volunteered with food banks. But what excites me about Stone Soup is that they do more than provide meals—they offer skill training that empowers people for the long term. I truly believe in the saying, “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.”

Now that I’m retired, I have the time and energy to give back in a new way. Volunteering with Stone Soup is simple and meaningful. I help deliver meals to shelters and programs around the city. Signing up for deliveries is easy. I pick up the meals in SE Portland at 11 a.m., and within 30 to 45 minutes, I’ve made my drop-offs. The folks at Stone Soup who load my car are always kind and appreciative—and the people receiving the meals are, too. What’s not to like?

This feels like the right way for me to give to my community in this stage of life. When I reflect on my privilege—reliable transportation, good health, a comfortable home, a supportive network, and food security—I feel a deep responsibility to give back.

I’m especially looking forward to celebrating the grand opening of the Stone Soup PDX Café on June 2nd. What a wonderful addition to our neighborhood!
